Another nice review, Nathan. I'd say you're hitting your stride. For me the best part was discovering that this familiar story was still new and different from anything I'd read before about the Arthur legend.

Spot on review. You've captured the book succinctly. I'm glad you pointed out how relatable the main character is. I think that's one reason it's such an easy story to read.

Very thought provoking stuff, Nathan. I really agree that the most important (and
likewise, shameful) question is, "What is the best use of my time right now?" I fear
that I need to be more obedient to what answers it yields, and more resistant to
what I impulsively (and unwittingly) put in its place. Thanks for the reminders and
insights.

So glad to see someone recommending reading these books with their children - that's how I read them long ago when I much simpler version of them was published as the "Winds of Light" series. Well, I say "I" - it was really my mom reading them aloud to me and my siblings.

My reviews will be up tomorrow and the day after on my blog ;).

Yes, it struck me as I read these two books that they could easily have been combined into one. As it was, at least the first story felt somewhat rushed. And as YA Fantasy is a genre known for huge scope and vast word counts, the books seemed quite short in comparison. So, I'm glad that we were able to read both books at once!

I think maybe we need to redefine privacy. I define privacy as having control over what people know about me. Things like my address, my birthday, what kind of car I drive are not all that private. In fact, its quite simple to get a lot of information these days about a person. I think the real problem does in fact lie with the users.

How is Facebook (or any online social media tool) any different than real life? If I were to tell you something in confidence (either explicitly or implied) and you went and told someone else (not just your wife) and I found out about it I would never tell you anything in confidence again. Its a matter of trust. Social media was and always will be built on trust.

Our social interactions on line and in real life define who we are and are often very complex. We talk differently to people based on our level of trust, their breadth of knowledge about us and our desires to share. A conversation I would have with you and Tara would be quite different than the conversation I would have with Ainsley and Alex (and hopefully someday Adeline). I do this seemingly automatically, but there are some complex actions taking place inside me governing what I say.

My problem with social media is that there is a good amount of people that don't understand this. They don't understand it in real life and they don't understand this online. We should use our brains not some complex settings to determine who sees what. Its kind of simple:

A Friend is someone you tell things to. Maybe private things to. However, not all friends are created equal. Facebook and Twitter treats all of your friends equally, so if there is something that you don't want others to know/hear, then don't post it online.

I largely agree with what you wrote, Nathan. I think it's a farce to put something on the Internet and then expect to try and control it.

I'm not terribly privacy-obsessed but I do have a few "non-negotiables." I don't want random people knowing my residential address or phone number, and I don't want pictures of my kids made public. Yes, I put such photos on Facebook but only my "friends" can see them. I'm comfortable with this because I rarely accept Facebook connections from people I don't know -- and trust -- in real life. And I'm also aware that any one of my FB friends could download those images and post them wherever they like.

I almost never mention my children by name on Twitter nor post pictures of them there -- maybe once in a while. I also removed my last name from my Twitter profile. I don't think it's stopped anyone from being able to "connect" with me there.

To me, as with many things, privacy on the web is all about expectations. You have to know what you're getting into, and really understand the privacy implications (or lack thereof) of various platforms.

I'm glad you suggested readers start with book one. Even the lucky person who wins your give-away would be wise to do so. No, it's not impossible to jump into this one, given the helps Mr. Lawhead provided, but the story will be much richer, I think--properly seasoned (to stay within your food metaphor. ;-) )

Welcome to book reviewing! Great review. I love this mix of content on your page. I usually post about writing, for awhile a lot on cooking (though that blog ran into technical problems), and sometimes I do it on my main blog, though less often, and occasionally book reviews. I joined the Eye of the Sword blog tour late, but have a post there with some comments about the book.

Welcome to the tour, Nathan. I hope your regular visitors are OK with you doing the occasional review because this was well done. You had a similar reading experience to mine. I gulped this one down (to stay with the food theme. ;-) )
